L/AB c/o Off-White™: The Story of a Visionary Legacy and Experiment
The brand L/AB c/o Off-White™ doesn’t just follow tradition by chance – it’s a direct continuation of Virgil Abloh’s intellectual legacy, who has been rewriting the rules of luxury fashion since founding Off-White in 2012. Abloh always viewed fashion as a living organism and a sociological experiment. The new L/AB line takes this idea further: it opens the archives, revives the concept of “Laboratory of Fun” from the Fall/Winter 2021 shows, and transforms traditional design into an open platform where the boundaries between finished garments and continuous development blur.
History and Evolution: From Pyrex Vision to L/AB
The journey to L/AB began over a decade ago and has passed through key milestones:
-
2012 (Pyrex Vision & RSVP Gallery): Virgil Abloh starts printing on discarded pieces from Champion and Ralph Lauren, laying the foundation for the idea that concept and thought hold more value than the material itself.
-
2013 (The Birth of Off-White™): The brand is established in Milan, defined as “the gray area between black and white”. It connects high fashion with street aesthetics.
-
2021 (“Laboratory of Fun”): Introduction of a concept that refuses to view fashion as a seasonal dictate. Creativity is declared an endless process and a laboratory full of experiments.
-
Present (The Birth of L/AB): L/AB c/o Off-White™ crystallizes these years of experimentation into an independent brand that functions as a creative incubator and aesthetic workshop.
Back to the Icons: Who Shapes and Wears the Off-White™ Aesthetic?
The aesthetic that L/AB draws from has captivated the most influential faces in contemporary pop culture, music, and sports. People who wear these pieces often don’t just use them as clothing, but as collectible objects and cultural manifestos:
-
Rihanna & A$AP Rocky: Longtime ambassadors and friends of the brand, regularly showcasing the most experimental pieces and prototypes before their official release.
-
Travis Scott & Drake: Music icons who have embraced the fusion of streetwear and high fashion, popularizing a specific laboratory aesthetic of mixing styles.
-
Bella Hadid & Hailey Bieber: Models who have helped define the brand's visual style on runways and in the streets (Hailey Bieber even wore wedding dresses designed under the Off-White™ label).
-
Serena Williams: The connection between elite sports and fashion culminated in specially designed match-ready skirts and sneakers for the US Open.
Visual Signature and Laboratory Aesthetics
L/AB c/o Off-White™ retains iconic elements of the original brand but pushes them into an even rawer form. You’ll recognize it by industrialized details, exposed seams, revealed construction elements, the use of bold typographic quotation marks, and technical graphics that look like they’ve been pulled straight from the designer's sketchbook during the creative process.
