Birkenstock Madrid Birko-Flor

Japanese Minimalism on Your Feet: Birkenstock Kyoto

For the first time in over thirty years, Birkenstock named a new model after a Japanese city – and it wasn’t random. Birkenstock Kyoto carries the name of Japan's cultural and historical heart, perfectly matching its character: seamlessly blending the old with the new, athletic aesthetics with the traditional comfort of Birkenstock. The silhouette quickly became a favorite choice for those seeking something bolder than classic Arizona straps, without sacrificing comfort. The model has also appeared in limited and designer collaborations, further solidifying its status.

History: First Japanese Name in 34 Years

Kyoto was introduced by Birkenstock in 2020 – it was the first model to bear the name of a Japanese city in about 34 years. The name perfectly captured the character of the silhouette, which combines athletic design with a suede upper into one fluid line suitable for everyday wear without losing comfort. Kyoto later saw the release of a premium limited edition Kyoto Tradition made from fine deer leather, launched in September 2024 to celebrate the brand's 250th anniversary, along with a collaboration with streetwear brand Concepts.

Technology: Contoured Insole and Double Velcro Straps

What makes Kyoto comfortable despite its bolder, athletic shape are these features:

• Contoured Cork-Latex Insole: Gradually adapts to the shape of your foot, providing tailored support the longer you wear it.
• Deep Heel Cup: Supports the foot's tissue and keeps the heel bone firmly in its natural position.
• Side Arch Support: Wraps around the midfoot bones, adding stability with every step.
• Raised Toe Pockets: Allow your toes to remain comfortably spread in their natural position instead of being cramped.
• Double Velcro Straps: Allow you to adjust the width of the sandal from the inside and outside for a precise fit on your foot.
• EVA Outsole: Lightweight and flexible, ideal for wearing on the go and throughout the day.

Design

The suede or nubuck upper secured with Velcro gives Kyoto a distinctly sportier silhouette than classic Arizona straps – the combination of textures between the upper and strap adds visual depth that you’ll appreciate upon closer inspection.

Who This Model Is For

Kyoto is a fashion silhouette for you if you’re looking for a bolder, more athletic sandal with real arch support – perfect for travel and everyday wear, where you want a combination of striking design with the comfort Birkenstocks are known for.
