Hoka® Clifton 11
The shoe that forever changed the approach to cushioning - Hoka Clifton 11
There are few shoes nicknamed "the shoe that changed running" – Hoka Clifton is one of them. The concept was developed by two former Salomon employees who aimed to solve a single problem: faster downhill running. The result was footwear with an unprecedentedly voluminous sole and maximum cushioning, which rewrote the rules of the entire category within a few years. Today's eleventh generation remains true to the original philosophy, even though much has changed over more than a decade of development.
History: from the French mountains to industry bestseller
The Hoka brand was founded in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two experienced trail runners and former Salomon employees who wanted to design a shoe that would enable faster downhill running. They came up with a model whose oversized sole offered significantly more cushioning than was common on the market at that time. The name Hoka comes from the Māori language and means "to fly over the earth" – a reference to the ambition to help runners tackle challenging terrain with ease.
A pivotal milestone was 2014, when the brand introduced the Clifton model. It quickly became a bestseller and earned the nickname "the shoe that changed running" due to a combination that previously seemed impossible – significant cushioning in a surprisingly lightweight package. With this move, Clifton solidified Hoka's position as a leader in the maximalist running shoe segment and sparked a trend that most competitors now follow.
Technology: compression-molded EVA foam and new upper
The eleventh generation, unlike the significantly redesigned tenth, primarily focuses on the upper and fit, while the cushioning core remains tried and tested:
- Compression-molded EVA foam (CMEVA): Full-length midsole with a 42 mm stack in the heel and an 8 mm drop – soft yet balanced foam that prioritizes durability and stability over the latest, but less durable PEBA foam found in competing models.
- New engineered mesh upper: Replaced the older jacquard construction and brought a more breathable, comfortable fit.
- 3D printed insole with open cells: Softer and better moisture-wicking than traditional insoles – a change you'll notice right from the first wear and that will be felt even during all-day use.
Durability
Thanks to the durable CMEVA foam, the Clifton ranks among the more enduring daily trainers on the market – typically lasting 480–650 km, and even more for lighter runners. However, the exposed foam on the outsole without rubber coverage wears out slightly faster than models with a full rubber outsole, so actual durability mainly depends on the runner's weight and surface.
Who the model is for
The Clifton 11 is a performance shoe for you if you run regular daily kilometers and seek maximum comfort without the need to pay for the latest superfoam technologies – ideal also as a versatile shoe for all-day wear outside of training.

A technological revolution in cushioning and a new definition of functional design with HOKA
The brand HOKA represents the pinnacle of performance footwear in Footshop's portfolio, having defined the maximalism category. This French-born project burst onto the market with a vision that radically rejected the then-current trends of minimalism and "barefoot" running. Instead of thin soles, HOKA offered a massive midsole with unprecedented cushioning. Today, this footwear is seen as a technological statement sought after not only by ultra-marathoners but also by a community focused on modern urbanism, where comfort and technical aesthetics are priorities.
From Alpine Peaks to the Front of the Peloton: History and Biomechanical Progress
The brand's history began in 2009 in Annecy in the French Alps, where it was founded by two visionaries and experts in sports equipment development, Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard. Their goal was to develop a shoe that, thanks to its specific geometry, would allow for faster and gentler descents in extreme terrain. The name "Hoka One One" comes from Māori and translates to "to fly over the earth", perfectly defining the feeling of walking and running that these shoes provide.
In just one decade, HOKA has conquered the world of professional running. Today, stars like three-time Olympic triathlon champion Jan Frodeno and holder of multiple course records in ultra-long distances Jim Walmsley dominate the brand's models. However, due to its unique, almost "oversized" silhouette, the brand has also spilled into the lifestyle sphere, becoming a staple in the wardrobes of those who view shoes as tools for maximum performance as well as specific aesthetic objects.
Meta-Rocker Engineering and Pillars of Technological Superiority
What we appreciate about HOKA shoes at Footshop is their comprehensive technological engineering that addresses movement efficiency at every stage of the step. A key element is the Meta-Rocker geometry, a specific curvature of the sole with a low drop that acts as a cradle, supporting a smooth transition from heel to toe. Among the most valued models in our selection are:
- HOKA Clifton: The standard for road running and high-end daily wear. It offers the perfect balance between cushioning and responsiveness while maintaining an extremely low weight.
- HOKA Bondi: A model with maximum cushioning using ultra-light EVA foam, synonymous with joint protection over long distances.
- HOKA Speedgoat: An iconic trail silhouette equipped with a sole featuring specific grip that ensures traction in the most challenging technical terrain.
- HOKA Tor Ultra / Kaha: Models utilizing waterproof membranes and premium nubuck, which have become icons of modern functional design.
At Footshop, we recommend pairing these models with progressive technical apparel. Investing in HOKA footwear is an investment in the health of your musculoskeletal system and in a design that isn't afraid to stand out. Choose your pair from our premium selection and experience the technology that has taught the world to love movement in complete comfort.
