Salomon XT-6 Protective

A silhouette designed for ultramarathon runners, loved by Parisians - Salomon XT-6

The shoe that François D'haene wore while running a hundred miles now strolls the boulevards of Paris on the feet of people who may never have seen a mountain trail. Salomon XT-6 was created as a purely performance tool for the toughest ultramarathon runners in the world, but over the course of a decade, it has become one of the defining silhouettes of fashionable streetwear. This transformation from technical gear to fashion icon is one of the most intriguing stories in recent years of sports footwear. Yet, the XT-6 still retains its complete technical foundation that first took it to the mountains.

History: designed for Kilian Jornet and François D'haene

The model debuted in 2013, designed by the Salomon S/LAB team under the guidance of designer Benjamin Grenet specifically for elite ultramarathon runners like Kilian Jornet and François D'haene. The target audience was runners tackling distances around 50 miles (80 km) at once – D'haene himself described the shoe as a good compromise between stability, protection, and performance in ultra-trail races, and he wore it on long walks under 100 miles.

Around 2020–2021, young Parisians began wearing old trail XT-6s passed down from their fathers as a fashion piece – a cultural shift that definitively transformed the silhouette from expert gear to a fashion statement. Today, the XT-6 lives a dual life: as a reliable tool for trail runners and as one of the most sought-after sneakers on the street.

Technology: agileCHASSIS, endoFit, and Mud Contagrip

What makes the XT-6 stable on technical terrain even after hours of running are these elements:

• agileCHASSIS (ACS): A stabilizing structure that works with the EnergyCell midsole, providing cushioning and support even after dozens of kilometers on uneven terrain.
• endoFit™: An inner hugging sleeve that conforms to the shape of the foot perfectly and keeps the foot in place even during rapid descents.
• sensiFIT™: A construction that extends from the midsole to the laces, wrapping the foot all around and ensuring a snug, “tailored” fit.
• Mud Contagrip® outsole: Deep, sharp lugs (around 5.5 mm) made from a sticky rubber compound, optimized for loose, soft, and uneven surfaces.

Specifications

Weighing around 365 grams, the shoe's robust mountain designation is reflected in its weight. A stack height of 22 mm in the forefoot and 32 mm in the heel keeps the foot relatively close to the ground, while a generous 10 mm drop makes the ride forgiving even when fatigue sets in during later stages of the run.

Who the model is for

The XT-6 is both a fashion and sports silhouette – ideal for you if you run long trail distances and ultramarathons and appreciate stability on technical terrain, but it also works as a striking, technically-backed sneaker for everyday urban wear.
